American As Apple Pie - Trucha con la Carucha

Chicano Soul x Ernie Lucero — “American As Apple Pie 2026”

A powerful collaboration between photographer Arturo Meza of Chicano Soul and renowned  print maker, Ernie Lucero, this piece brings together two distinct forms of Chicano artistic expression: photography and cut-paper art.

At its center is a classic lowrider—an icon of Chicano culture, identity, craftsmanship, and pride—reimagined through Ernie Lucero’s intricate papel picado-inspired artwork. The detailed cut-paper patterns transform the automobile into something both mechanical and organic, creating a striking contrast against the documentary-style photograph.

Captured by Arturo Meza, the image places the artwork within the community and culture that inspired it, surrounded by the people, streets, and Southern California landscape that give the piece its sense of place.

The collaboration speaks to memory, identity, craftsmanship, and the preservation of Chicano culture through art. It is a meeting of photography and printmaking—two artists interpreting the same culture through different visual languages.
